Clara Penati, LCSWA
Clara Penati, LCSWA
Clara Penati, LCSWA has been working with children, adolescents, and their families in various capacities for the past 6 years. She is trained in EMDR, art, somatic, and play therapy methods. Her areas of expertise include anxiety, anger management, trauma, depression, and attachment issues. Clara provides individual therapy for children and adolescents as part of the parent-child model at Grew, Morter, & Hartye. Clara also develops and leads Social Skills Groups for children and pre-adolescents. The specific skills taught in each group are age-appropriate and focus on increasing positive interaction with peers.
Clara provides a safe, fun, and non-judgmental space for children, helping them to feel as comfortable as possible on the way to building a strong therapeutic relationship. Often, children have difficulty verbalizing what is causing them distress. Clara engages children in art, play, and music in ways that are fun while also providing emotional regulation and a nonverbal outlet for their distress. She includes psychoeducation when appropriate as a way to help normalize their experiences and feelings, as well as teaches mindfulness techniques to support children in learning how to regulate and cope with their emotions. Additionally, as a trained EMDR therapist, Clara helps her clients to resolve their emotional “stuck points,” and finds EMDR to be a very effective way to help children move beyond their distress.
Clara believes in a strengths-based and client centered approach, one that respects our innate ability to heal and builds upon what clients are already doing to improve their situation. She also recognizes the importance of the parent-child bond, as it provides a secure base for children to feel confident enough to explore the world. Clara seeks to work with families in a way that supports them in strengthening their attachment throughout their child’s development. Lastly, Clara sees the healing and powerful impact that mindfulness can play in an individual’s life, from reducing anxiety and depression to teaching vital coping skills. She enjoys sharing this passion with her clients.
After living throughout the United States, and in parts of Mexico and Canada, Clara has come to understand the deep need within us all to feel validated and heard, especially so when it comes to children. Her training as a social worker coupled with her clinical experience enables her to connect with the individual and family system, as well as the larger community systems impacting clients.
When not in the office, Clara can be found going for hikes, camping, and meditating in the park. As a recent resident of the Raleigh area she is very excited to explore all that this community has to offer.
