Barbara Van Sant is the newest member to GMH joining February 2017. Originally from Florida, she began her career as an exceptional student educator, and has over 38 years of experience with families and individuals with autism spectrum, behavioral issues and developmental delays. Barbara’s main strengths revolve around serving as an educational liaison for school age persons with an IEP or 504 plan. Additionally, she works with families and individuals who have been assessed with autism spectrum in the areas of soft skills, employment success and life skills. Other services she offers include coaching for both adults and children with ADHD, and stress reduction training using conscious breathing techniques and yoga.
She has had many roles over the decades serving as classroom teacher, a university professor with an emphasis on special education, a national and international educational consultant, a project manager, a life coach, a yoga teacher, an author, a spouse and parent.
Barbara has co-authored three manuals for the Minnesota Department of Education related to best practices, non-biased assessments and understanding special education rules and regulations. She has written two short books; one on parenting and the other on aging happily. As a coach, she partners with parents, business executives, creative artists and students to assist them in bringing their best work out into the world.
As an exceptional student educational specialist and liaison, Barbara focuses on strength-based approaches, leveraging learning styles and positive behavioral supports. She brings in her knowledge of business management to facilitate building systems that empower individuals, and as a coach she focuses on life, social and soft skills such as prioritization, goal setting, planning and scheduling, stress management, communication skills, organizational skills, memory improvement and homework activities. Barbara’s overarching belief as an optimist is that there is some good in each situation, and by looking for the bright spot, the good will be found.
